Now that Summer has arrived, here is an opportunity to spend a day mountaineering on one of Wales’s most famous peaks - a journey of around 5 hours following the classic path to the summit of Cader Idris – one of Wales best mountains.

The route starts from the Dôl Idris car park before climbing steeply through an ancient woodland following the waterfalls of Nant y Gader. Shortly after leaving the woodland, the path forks near a slate bridge, where you will need to keep to the left and follow the path, slightly less steep by this point, towards Cwm Cau. The majestic cliffs slowly close around you and after walking for a little over an hour, the terrain will gradually level out and in front of you Llyn Cau rests quietly in the enormous shadow of Craig Cau. The path to the summit turns left before reaching the lake and climbs steeply to the ridge, which it follows around the lake to the stile on top of Craig Cau. The expansive views that you get from this small summit are almost as good as the ones you get from the main summit. Now unfortunately you must descend a few hundred feet along the path before re-starting your climb towards Pen y Gadair. Most of Wales can be seen from the summit of Cader Idris – Snowdon, the Clwydian Range, Pumlumon, the Brecon Beacons, Pembrokeshire, the Llŷn Peninsula and Anglesey, and if it is extremely clear – Wicklow mountains in Ireland, which are a 110 miles away! You can return to the car park the same way as you ascended, or by following the ridge to the East to reach Mynydd Moel, before descending with the fence down the wide ridge to the South. You can then follow the path down to the slate bridge where you will re-join the first section of the Minffordd path down to Dôl Idris to complete a challenging day of mountaineering. You will need suitable equipment, e.g. map and compass, suitable clothing and footwear along with food and drink for this walk.
