Llyn Cwellyn Boardwalk
This accessible boardwalk is situated at the shore of Llyn Cwellyn.
How about visiting this beautiful spot on the shore of Llyn Cwellyn in the north of the National Park? A level boardwalk will take you through a delightful little woodland on the lake shore, affording striking views of Llyn Cwellyn and Mynydd Mawr to one direction, and Snowdon to the other.
Why Fairies?
It’s not uncommon in Wales for fairytales to be linked to lakes, and Llyn Cwellyn is no exception.
A young shepherd from Betws Garmon fell head over heels in love with a fairy that lived in the lake. The young lad abducted the fairy, who eventually agreed to become his wife on the condition that he was never to touch her with iron. If he were to do so then she would return to the lake to her people.
They lived happily for many years – the farm prospered and two children were born to them. One day, as the couple tried to catch a mare to sell in the fair, the husband threw a bridle over the mare’s head, but in doing so he caught his wife’s cheek with an iron bit. In a flash, his wife had disappeared back to the lake. She was not seen again, apart from one night when she came to her husband’s window to ask him to care tenderly for her children.
