We are piloting a pre-booking system at Pen y Pass car park. The booking system will be in place from April 8th – November 8th 2021.
When can I pre-book a parking space?
You can book anytime up until 24 hours before your planned visit, however we expect that spaces will sell out very quickly therefore we recommend booking well in advance.
What if I haven’t pre-booked?
Anyone without a pre-booked space can use the Park and Ride facilities at Nant Peris and Llanberis to access Pen y Pass. Buses run every 15-30 minutes up to Pen y Pass.
Can I pre-book a parking space for a minibus?
No – the system does not recognise separate vehicles but this will be managed by our on site staff when you arrive. We have limited parking spaces suitable for minibuses.
Will this be policed at Pen y Pass?
Yes, there will be a team of staff on the ground 24 hours a day checking tickets and allowing access to ones who have pre-booked.
Can I get a refund if I decide not to visit for a particular reason e.g. unfavourable forecast?
No. All bookings are non-refundable.
Will I have to use the Sherpa to access Pen y Pass?
If you haven't pre-booked a parking space then yes, you will have to use the Sherpa to access Pen y Pass.
However, you are able to be dropped off/picked up from Pen y Pass car park. Cycling to Pen y Pass is also possible.
How often does the Park and Ride Sherpa bus run to and from Pen-y-Pass?
- Monday-Friday (excluding public holidays): S1 and S2 Sherpa bus provide a service between Llanberis – Nant Peris – Pen-y-Pass every 30 minutes between 07:30am (from Llanberis) and 18:35pm (from Pen y Pass)
- Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays: S1 and S2 Sherpa bus provide a service between Nant Peris – Pen-y-Pass every 15 minutes. The S1 and S2 Sherpa bus provide a service from Llanberis - Nant Peris – Pen-y-Pass every 30 minutes. These services run between 06:45am (from Llanberis) and 18:35pm (from Pen-y-Pass).
There are some time changes during the day so ensure to check the timetable before you leave
From where exactly do I get on the Sherpa that will take me to Pen y Pass?
The Sherpa will pick users up from bus stops in Llanberis (LL55 4TD) and from the Nant Peris Park and Ride site (LL55 4UF).
Saturday, Sunday and public holidays S6 From Bangor (Stand B interchange) via Bethesda and Ogwen, runs on the hour every hour. First bus leaves Bangor at 07:00. Lat bus leaves Ogwen back to Bangor 18:00
How do I buy a ticket for the Sherpa?
You can buy your ticket on the bus. It is possible to buy a ticket for a single journey or a day pass that will allow you to hop on and off the Sherpa as you wish throughout the day.

Do I need to wear a facemask?
Yes. Since 27 July 2020, it has been mandatory to wear a facemask on public transport in Wales.
What will happen if I park on the clearway?
North Wales Police have stated that anybody found to be parked on the clearway or causing an obstruction will have their vehicle removed at their own expense.
Will blue badge holders be able to park at Pen y Pass?
There will be a limited number of car spaces available free of charge for blue badge holders. These will be available on a first come first served basis. You will need to show your blue-badge to our team when accessing the car park.
What if I'm a wheelchair user and want to use the Sherpa?
All Sherpa journeys will be operated by low floor buses with wheelchair space and ramp to ensure that the stops provided with raised kerbs are served by accessible vehicles.
I'm staying at the YHA at Pen y Pass, will I be able to park at Pen y Pass?
Specific parking arrangements have been put in place for those staying at the YHA, please contact the YHA at Pen y Pass for further details.
What if I want to go up to see the sunrise on the weekend and need to catch the bus before 6:45am? Can I park at Pen y Pass without a pre-booked space if I’m early enough?
Pre-book tickets will be be available for overnight parking as well as during the day. If you don’t have a pre-booked ticket it will still be possible to park at Pen y Gwryd and walk up the public footpath for approximately ¾ miles to Pen y Pass. Remember to park legally and not on the clearway. North Wales Police will have the authority to tow your vehicle if parked illegally on the clearway.
Will the toilets at Pen y Pass be open?
Yes. There are also toilet facilities at the Park and Ride site in Nant Peris. Although, Hafod Eryri (summit building) is closed so there will be no cafe or toilets at the summit. Remember to GO before you go!

Do motorcyclists have to pre-book a space?
Yes. We have no allocated parking spaces for motorcycles at Pen y Pass therefore motorcycles will be required to pre-book like all other vehicles.
Can motorcyclists share a parking space to reduce cost?
No. The parking bays are for one vehicle only.
