The Snowdonia National Park Authority is the Local Planning Authority for the National Park area. It has a statutory obligation to prepare a Development Plan and determine planning applications under the provisions of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

In carrying out its statutory planning responsibilities, the National Park Authority (NPA) must also have regard to the statutory responsibilities and management role of National Park Authorities as set out in the Environment Act 1995.
These purposes are to:
Conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Park.
Promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Park, by the public.
The National Park also has a duty to:
Seek to foster the social and economic well being of the local communities within the Park area.
There is a fully adopted development plan for the Snowdonia National Park, the Eryri Local Plan, which was adopted in November 1999. The Plan seeks to express Park purposes and duties in terms of land use planning and development policies.
